Mrs. Lynn applied for and received a grant from the Laura Bush Foundation. This grant was greatly needed to provide students with current books and magazines that reflect the diversity of the new and emerging job market. Due to previous storm damage, many of the library's reference and non fiction books had been damaged by water and were discarded. The materials purchased cover the curriculum areas of literature, science, physics, history, criminology and health. Many of the literature reference books are in electronic format called eBooks. The eBook is a replica of the print form and can be read utilizing a computer. The eBook allows several students to access the information at the same time.
For the students who do not plan to attend 4 year colleges, we encourage them to pursue industry related careers that require community college or technical school education. A variety of books were selected such as ‘how-to' books on gardening, basic electricity, homebuilding, sewing, welding, automobile repair, landscaping and farming. The grant also allowed for the purchase of magazine subscriptions. With the addition of these new materials, Jackson High School library is more capable of meeting the information needs of the students and teachers.
